How FictionTools Works

Start with a project, not a database account

Choose New Project, enter a title and optionally an author or pen name, then save the project as a .fictionproject file. There is no WRS author account to create.

Build only the structure you need

A standalone novelist can create one book and start adding characters and scenes. A series author can add multiple series/books. A shared-universe project can keep several connected series in one file when cross-series continuity matters.

Write out of order

Chapters and scenes use stable internal IDs. A scene can exist before you know its final chapter. Visible chapter numbering and narrative order can change later without breaking links.

Track different kinds of characters

Humans, pets, AIs, robots, aliens and other fictional entities can all be first-class characters. Origin fields can represent birth, hatch, creation or activation.

Separate story chronology from narrative order

Events store fictional chronology independently from where the reader encounters them. Flashbacks, flash-forwards, time travel and alternate timelines can therefore be marked without pretending story occurrence order and reading order are identical.

Let FictionTools calculate and cross-check

Age reports use character origins and event dates. Relationship and pregnancy records support continuity checks. Additional warnings flag broken references or obviously inconsistent structures.

Protect the work while you are absorbed in it

Browser recovery updates after changes. Automatic rolling backups can be written to a chosen AutoBackups folder where browser support permits. Manual backups are unlimited, and the default project reminds you after one changed hour without a manual backup.

Make the workspace comfortable

Choose Day, Night or automatic-by-device-clock mode, pick preset or custom colours, and save language, regional, date and time display preferences in the project file.
